Comeback Confirmed? Sergio (Checo) Peréz Formula 1 driver
After months of speculation, it now appears almost certain: Sergio Pérez will return as a Formula 1 driver to the Formula 1 grid in 2026, joining the newly formed Cadillac F1 Team.
The 35-year-old Mexican driver, who was sidelined for the 2025 season after parting ways with Red Bull, has reportedly reached an agreement with Cadillac. According to multiple sources, the official announcement is expected at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza this September.
A Veteran Returns
Pérez, a six-time Grand Prix winner, was dropped by Red Bull after a difficult 2024 campaign. Despite a strong start to his Red Bull career in 2021, his performance declined, and he ended the season 285 points behind teammate Max Verstappen.
Yet, Cadillac sees value in experience. Team principal Graeme Lowdon has emphasized the importance of pairing technical skill with leadership. Pérez’s ability to manage tyres, motivate teams, and develop cars over a season makes him an ideal candidate for a new team entering under the 2026 regulations.
Even Verstappen endorsed his former teammate, saying:
“Checo has always been very strong… I think he is a very good choice, especially for a new team.”
Who Will Join Him?
While Pérez seems locked in for one seat, the second Cadillac F1 spot remains open. The team is reportedly considering:
- Valtteri Bottas – Former Mercedes driver with proven consistency
- Alex Dunne – Rising Irish talent from Formula 3
- Felipe Drugovich, Jak Crawford, and Colton Herta – Young stars from F2 and IndyCar
Cadillac is expected to pair Pérez with a rookie or younger driver, balancing experience with future potential.
What’s Next?
The deal is not yet signed, but insiders suggest Pérez will put pen to paper in early September, just ahead of Monza. With Cadillac preparing its infrastructure and technical team, the driver lineup is the final piece of the puzzle.
